Founded: Envisioning a North Shore daytime quilters’ guild, a small group of women met in August of 1996. Subsequently, the first formal gathering of the Grouse Mountain Days Quilters’ Guild was held on September 19, 1996 at St Martin’s Anglican Church, North Vancouver. Sewers have continued, after 25 years, to meet in the church hall.
Early Years: Beginning in 1997, the new guild, with great enthusiasm and 35 committed members, had a library of 100 books, had created a logo and had planned its first retreats and many group projects. They also created a constitution this same year and Grouse Mountain Day Quilters’ Guild is a registered Society in the Province of British Columbia. In the spring of 2004, regular monthly newsletters were begun and the guild’s first quilt show was held at St Martin’s Church. Subsequent “Quilts in the Chapel” were hosted in 2008, 2011 and 2017.
Focus: The guild demonstrates a broad focus to include friendship, skill enhancement and community service. Members continue to celebrate group and individual project efforts as well as special occasions. Talented sewers share their skills and techniques. People in our broader community benefit from regular donations of handmade quilts, all made with love for babies, children, seniors in care, fire and hurricane victims, and families in need. A recent group project was Quilts of Valour, making quilts for persons suffering from PTSD. North Vancouver’s Shelter to Home clients regularly receive quilts.
Currently: Throughout the 2020/2021 COVID-19 restrictions, the guild has met virtually. We have appreciated presentations from many fibre artists using Zoom technology. As we move forward, our regular in person meetings, combined with some on line presentations, will be held the third Thursday of each month from 10 am to 1 pm allowing us to share the friendships and skills we all value.
